2023 Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council

Mayor William B. Judge has announced the start of his Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council. Working with the Barberton City Schools, fifteen (15) energetic and engaged students have signed up for this initial council. The students are in grades 9 through 12 and will see first-hand how our local government works by witnessing the process in action.

The City of Barberton Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council is a unique collaboration between the Mayor’s Office and our future leaders of the City of Barberton. The purpose of the program is to encourage students to become active participants in their local government and community by working with city leaders to address issues that directly affect young people in the city while learning how the city government operates. The panel will sit with the Mayor and various city departments to have open discussions about what matters most to them, how they would like to see the city move forward, and what role they can play to effect change. The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council will have the opportunity to be involved with City Council meetings and other board and commission meetings to gain personal insight into how local government works.

Mayor William B. Judge stated, “Our youth are not only future leaders of tomorrow, but also active civic contributors of today. This program has been created to encourage both youth leadership and service opportunities to develop leadership skills, highlight youth ideas and opinions, and unite the students of the Barberton City School District.”

The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council meetings are held on the first and third Mondays of each month from 4:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. The program will begin on Monday, February 6, 2023, prior to City Council meetings. The meetings are held in the City Municipal Building.

For questions or additional information on this program, please contact the Office of the Mayor at 330.848.6719 or [email protected].

Students who would like to apply can speak to their school counselor to get started. The program is currently full, but new participants will be accepted on an ongoing basis, as space permits.
