COVID-19 UPDATE

The Barberton Municipal Court has been closely following media reports on the coronavirus, known as COVID-19, and is committed to do its part in combating the spread of this virus. In light of recent developments the Court has implemented the following to reduce courthouse foot-traffic:

  • The Barberton Municipal Building, which houses the Court, is closed: Access restricted. 
  • Defendants may immediately request an automatic twenty-one (21) day continuance of their Arraignment by contacting the Clerk of Court at 330-861-7191
  • Defendants with traffic, criminal and/or civil matters currently scheduled before the Court - other than arraignment - (pretrials, status hearings, sentencings, etc.) should call the judge’s office to which their case is assigned:
    • for scheduled proceedings before Judge McKenney,  please call 330-861-7215
    • for scheduled proceedings before Judge Flagg Lanzinger, please call 330-861-7217
  • All jury trials are suspended for the weeks of March 16 and March 23, 2020, unless a person’s constitutional right to a speedy trial is in jeopardy.
  • Defendants may request an initial video appearance via Skype, FaceTime, or Facebook Video by submitting their request to courts@cityofbarberton.com to review eligibility and scheduling.
  • Defendants scheduled with the Barberton Probation Department are asked to call 330-848-6727 and leave a message.  Please include your name and contact phone number.  You will be contacted to discuss your case.
  • Payments may be made online. Individuals requesting a payment plan extension are asked to call 330-861-7191
  • With the closing of the Barberton Municipal Building, the Clerk of Courts is also closed to public access;
    • Civil filings may be mailed to Diana Stevenson, Clerk of Court, with appropriate filing fee
    • Clerk of Courts, will accept motions on pending cases faxed to 330-848-6779

We will continue to monitor reports from federal, state and local health experts and respond accordingly to advisories and directives from the Governor, Supreme Court of Ohio, and Department of Public Safety. Additional updates will be provided as this situation continues to evolve.

The court serves the communities of Barberton, Green, New Franklin, Norton, Copley, Coventry and Clinton. Barberton Municipal Court is an integral part of the state court system in Ohio. The court conducts preliminary hearings in felony cases, handles traffic and criminal misdemeanors, and civil cases where the money in dispute does not exceed $15,000.
