Barberton's History
Founded by industrialist entrepreneur O.C. Barber In 1891, Barberton was located along railroad lines, the Tuscarawas River and the Ohio Canal. It grew into a robust manufacturing town so quickly that it earned the “Magic City” nickname that remains to this day. Our history is built upon a legacy of business, manufacturing, renowned architecture, revolutionary agricultural practices and community pride. With the warm weather finally here, now is the perfect time for adults and teens (ages 12+) to earn their Ohio Boating License together!
Whether you're planning a trip to the lake or want to master the jet ski this summer, our Ohio Boating Education Course (OBEC) covers what you need to know to safely and legally operate a craft over 10 hp.
THE QUICK DETAILS:
📅 When: Monday, June 22 – Thursday, June 25 (6:00 PM – 8:00 PM)
📍 Where: Active Adult Center | 500 W. Hopocan Ave
💰 Cost: $20 (Includes materials + food on test day!)
👤 Who: Ages 12+ (Perfect for families!)
⚓ WHY TAKE THIS CLASS?
Skip the Online Stress: Learn in person and take your proctored exam right in class on the final night.
Get on the Water Faster: Pass the test on the final night and walk away with a temporary certificate that night! Your official NASBLA-approved card (valid for life!) will follow in the mail.
Stay Legal: Ohio law requires anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1982, to have this card to operate a boat or PWC. Get the whole house "lake-ready" before vacation season hits!

As our Barberton Facts series continues, we’re highlighting another important part of the city’s early industrial story. When O.C. Barber switched his match factory from water power to boiler power, he purchased the patent for a water‑tube safety boiler created by Scotland‑born inventor Allan Stirling. He formed a company to produce this new tubular boiler, creating the Stirling Boiler Company. With the careful negotiating guidance of Edward Stettinius and Barber, the company was later acquired by Babcock and Wilcox of New Jersey, which became the largest commercial boiler manufacturer in the world.
Thanks to the research of local historian Bob Snyder, we can better understand how the Stirling Boiler Company contributed to Barberton’s growth and helped shape the city’s industrial identity.

Yesterday, Mayor Judge spoke at the Barberton Kiwanis meeting, offering exciting updates on America 250 and Barberton’s 135th Anniversary celebrations, infrastructure improvements like Street Resurfacing and Waterline Replacements, progress at the Trucen Farm Housing Development, the Dam Project, and enhancements across our Parks.
